Poker is a card game played by two or more players. It can be a fast-paced, exciting game and is usually played for cash. Players take turns betting on their hands in a clockwise direction until one player has all the chips or everyone folds. The high hand wins the pot.

There is a lot of skill involved in Poker, even though it is primarily a game of chance. A skilled player will be able to extract value from their winning hands and minimize losses from their losing ones. This is known as MinMax (Minimising Losses – Maximising Wins).

The basic rules of poker are that each player must “ante” a fixed amount of money into the pot before they are dealt cards. Thereafter, they bet into the pot according to the rules of the game. Players may also “check,” in which case they do not bet, but instead wait until it is their turn to act.

It is important to understand your opponents’ ranges. This means that you should try to work out the selection of hands that your opponent could have, and work out how likely it is that they will make a good hand that beats yours.

It is generally better to raise than call when you have a strong value hand. This way you can inflate the size of the pot and price out more weaker hands. In the long run this will make you more money than calling.
