The word “slot” has several meanings in sports. Traditionally, it meant “to cut or provide a slot in.” In modern usage, the word means “to drop a coin in”. Its meaning as a verb to fit something into a slot comes from 1888. The oldest sense is the one used in hockey. In the game of ice hockey, the slot is the area between the face-off circles, sometimes referred to as the scoring area.

In theory, a slot is simply an authorization for an aircraft to take-off and land at a particular airport. As such, it allows for a more efficient air traffic flow at busy airports. It also prevents repeated delays caused by multiple flights. This feature is already being used in several cities and airports across the globe. Its popularity is booming in large cities, but is still in its infancy. Nevertheless, the concept of slots has several applications in the future.

For example, the Dialog Engine recognizes multiple words or phrases that map to a specific slot. For instance, the entity value of New York can have synonyms like Big Apple or NYC. By using the Select Slot menu, the user can specify more than one word or phrase. A colored underline indicates the slot value. After mapping, the user can delete or edit the slot by selecting it from the Slots tab. There is no limit to how many slots you can map.
